Riso Animation Workshop with Angela Kirkwood → Sun 19 Apr
Spend a full day with Angela Kirkwood learning how to turn hand-drawn frames into a Risograph-printed animation loop, as part of our RISO CLUB 100 programme.
This one’s extra special because you leave with both physical riso prints and a finished digital animation, made in one sitting.
Part of RISO CLUB 100: an exhibition + live print programme celebrating 100 issues of RISOTTO's monthly print club.
You’ll create a short frame-by-frame loop, then scan or photograph your frames and lay them out as a contact sheet. Next, you’ll print that sheet in 2 colours on the riso, then scan it back in to bring it to life as a looping GIF.
The Session Will Cover…
+
- A brief intro to the Risograph printing process and its unique aesthetic (including layering, translucency, and happy accidents)
- How simple frame-by-frame loops work (no animation experience needed)
- Creating a short hand-drawn weaving loop, frame-by-frame
- Scanning or photographing your frames and building a contact sheet layout
- Printing a 2-colour riso contact sheet
- Scanning the printed sheet back in and exporting a looping GIF
What To Expect
+
In the first half of the workshop you’ll create a short hand-drawn, frame-by-frame weaving loop. In the second half, you’ll scan or photograph your frames, build a contact sheet layout, and print it in 2 colours on the Risograph. Finally, you’ll scan the printed contact sheet back in to create an animated sequence that has that unmistakable riso texture and wobble baked into the final GIF. It’s structured but playful, with plenty of support through each stage.
What You’ll Need
+
Please bring your laptop, as we will be using Photoshop to create your animated gif.
A smartphone can handy for photographing frames (optional). If you have favourite pens or drawing tools, bring them along, but we’ll have all the essentials too.
We’ll take a lunch break between 13:00–14:00. Bring lunch, or pop out locally.
Who It’s For
+
This workshop is ideal for illustrators, designers, artists, and curious beginners. You don’t need animation experience, and you don’t need to arrive with a polished idea. If you like drawing, experimenting, and learning through process, you’ll have a great time.
Workshop Outcome
+
Each participant will leave with a 2-colour riso printed contact sheet (an edition of 10 prints). Plus a looping riso GIF made from your printed frames, to share to your hearts content!
Why Join?
+
Because it’s a rare chance to spend a full day with Angela Kirkwood learning a process that moves between drawing, printing, and animation Angela’s world is packed with personality and play, and you’ll get to see how her frame-by-frame thinking translates into riso texture and wobble.
At this workshop, you get to make something that lives in both worlds: a beautiful printed artefact and a finished looping animation. You’ll learn a repeatable process you can use again and again, and leave with work that feels genuinely satisfying. Places are limited, so book early to secure your spot.
